Describes his training: basic, Brooks Field, San Antonio, Texas; gunnery school, Las Vegas, Nevada; entering air cadets and ground and flight school, California. Comments on dropping out of pilot training. [05:00-10:00] Describes training as a aeroplane mechanic and engineer, Keesler Field, Mississippi and B-24 crew formation and training, Salt Lake City, Utah and Tucson [Arizona]. Describes journey to Ireland via Bangor, Maine and Goose Bay, Labrador [Canada]. Remarks on training in Ireland and assignment to 489th Bomb Group. Anecdote about talking to Hunter's crew about their first mission. [10:00-15:00] Anecdote continued. Comments on practice flights with Lt Workman and assignment to 846th Squadron. Remarks on Captain Davis, their commanding officer, and Major Thayer Harper. Describes first mission, Kiel, Germany [6 July 1944] including comments about heavy flak by George Evans (radio operator). Describes second mission, Ascherslaben, Germany, 7 July 1944: aeroplane hit by FW-190. [15:00-20:00] Ascherslaben continued: Allen Newman (navigator) and Fred Irwin (bombardier) wounded; [Paul] Redden (top-turret gunner) killed in action and mentions Burke Anderson (tail-gunner) flying on this mission. Comments on attending Redden's funeral and three day's leave in London. [20:00-25:00] Describes cancelled missions to Berlin and mission to St Lo, France, including anecdote about Frank ?Trowbridge, from another crew, who was thrown clear of his aeroplane when it crashed, landed in German territory and returned to England.
