Description
Unnamed male, possible surname of Barney, recalls his experiences as a groundsman at various American airbases in Norfolk during the Second World War. Includes: Anecdote continued about meeting a Mustang pilot. Requests information about how Americans tried to photograph a Mustang flying over a Liberator. Anecdote about aeroplane, 'Lucky Penny II,' being converted into a simulator to train crews how to escape from ditched aeroplanes and comments on removal of aeroplane camouflage for speed reasons. Comments on aircraft taking-off and 'A' type runways. Anecdote about accidentally working on a runway when aeroplanes were taking-off, including his arrest and interview in the control tower. Comments on aeroplane, 'Rip Tide.' Anecdote about Americans trying to adapt a bicycle for ten crew members and their engineers making go-carts and modifying bicycles with steering wheels. Comments on dangers of loading bombs, seeing a bomb dump explode, and types of bombs and ammunition used. Remarks on how he had little information about missions. Comments on RAF bombers flying at night and watching a damaged Lancaster aeroplane land. Gives his opinions of aeroplanes, including Lancasters and B-24 Liberators.
