Ken Dougherty first served in the 445th Bomb Group (Tibenham) and then with the 389th Bomb Group (Hethel) where he was part of a Pathfinder crew. He was lead navigator of a Pathfinder crew, Baldwin Avery's crew, in the 564th Squadron when his plane was shot down over Germany in 1944. In the records, Baldwin Avery gives the date of the incident as 12 May 1944, and Kenneth Dougherty as 8 May 1944. After evading capture for several weeks, Dougherty was caught trying to steal a bicycle. He was taken to Wetzlar for questioning and then to Stalag Luft III West (Zagan). In January 1945, he was marched to the railhead at Spremberg and then taken to Nuremberg and Moosburg (part of the forced prisoner of war marches or long marches). Helen Sharman is the niece of Ken Dougherty and carried out the research.
