Description
Relates to Swift's experiences in a German prisoner-of-war camp during the Second World War. Further recollections and descriptions of mission on 6 March 1944 and time as a prisoner of war in Stalag Luft I. Describes accommodation in the camp; exercising; receiving news from home and sudden departure of German guards. Story of a fellow prisoner who had a broken arm and time taken to heal. Reflections on the detailed record-keeping of the Germans. Describes finding out burial places of Lt Bogusch, Lt Egan, Sgt Riley and Sgt Musa, with the help of a Dutch author, in the 1970s or 1980s. Discusses probable outcome of the aircraft crash. Describes his return visit to the Netherlands with members of the Robinson family, 1994. Recalls the crash site and visit to the American cemetery at Margraten, followed by a visit to Horsham St Faith. Reflects on not being able to visit the Memorial Library as it had burned down only three weeks prior to visit. For preceding recording, see MC 376/524/1. Side B of cassette annotated 'some after thoughts', implying it was recorded on separate occasion. For related telegrams and correspondence, see MC 371/420.
