Description
Two colour photographs of Frank Bales being presented with the Legion of Honour Medal. Two newspaper cuttings relating to the same event. Copy of an e-mail relating to the Legion of Honour Medal and its award to Mr Bales. John Frank Bales first served with the 492nd Bomb Group and then with the 467th Bomb Group in Roger L. Leister's crew. On 18 August 1944, their B-24 'Broad and High' was hit by anti-aircraft fire and was low on fuel on its way back from a mission. The B-24 crash landed at Kirby Bedon, injuring Mr Bales and killing four of the crew : 2nd Lt William M. Sherril, T/Sgt Darlton W. Pontius, T/Sgt. George Lifschitz and S/Sgt. Philip A. Snyder. Mr Bales was awarded the Legion of Honour Medal by the French Government in 2015.
