Description
Stories about experience of German machine gun fire at school; American pulling off remnants of split fingernail; flying on practice missions as a member of the Air Training Corps [ATC], with Capt. William Brown's crew and witnessing aircraft crash near-misses. Recalls the B-24s 'Hello Natural' and 'Fat Stuff' on the hardstand [448th Bomb Group, Seething]. Stories of incidents including cigarettes being mistaken for flares; being known on base because of his friendship with a Military Policeman; giving the Colonel a model aircraft. Recalls events and aftermath of the German fighter intrusion of 22 April 1944 ['Night of the Intruders']: being in the Observer Corps and seeing V-2 rocket trails but officially told they were Mosquito crashes, and use of radio on post for communicating with aircraft.
