Description
Dunger recalls a damaged B-17 narrowly missing crashing into a home near Rackheath runway, a school, the main road and house of Mrs Kemp and her daughter. Describes treatment of downed crew by Mrs Kemp and her grandmother. Story about dog adopted from old ack ack [anti-aircraft] battery which ran over to crash-landed aircraft, including description of encounter with downed crew returning from mission to ball-bearing factory in Poland and attempts to salvage the aircraft. Stories about airmen leaving unopened food and cigarette packets for Dunger and his friend Ken to take home. Description of passes needed for access to base and story about trouble caused by forgetting them. Story about proximity of cows to base and collecting extra milk for American crews who made hot chocolate in brake fluid tins. Stories about being given gin and going to 100th mission celebration. Story about an airman from Ohio who liked to visit animals on farm and introduced boys to chewing tobacco. Story about Polish pilots being forced to stay overnight on base because of weather.
