[00:00-05:00] Describes service as a staff sergeant engineer gunner: enlisted at Jefferson, Missouri, 11 November 1942; basic training, Miami Beach, Florida, 31 November and 'AM' school, Mississippi until, 1 March, including his first wage of $38. Describes gunnery school in Arizona, leaving 24 June, and meeting crew at Casper, Wyoming. Names crew: Robert Johnson (pilot); Lt Owens (co-pilot); Lt Landman (navigator); Lt Smiths (bombardier); T/Sgt Thachuck (engineer); Stan Jacewicz (radio operator); S/Sgt Claus and S/Sgt M? (waist-gunners) and S/Sgt ?Barrels (tail-gunner). Describes journey flying from Kansas via Goose Bay, Labrador [Canada], to Scotland, arriving at Hardwick, Norfolk, and flying as replacement members with older crews for first missions. [05:00-10:00] Describes flying conditions, 1943-1944: lack of fighter escorts, extreme cold and low morale. Describes mission to Kjeller, Oslo, Norway and damage to aeroplane. [10:00-15:00] Kjeller continued, 18 November 1943. Comments on aborted mission to Osnabruck, Germany, 22 December: John Thachuck killed.
